I hardly think so.
During the early years of this millennium, thousands of Irish women would have been told that the results of their Pap Smear tests were clear, not showing any cells of concern. However, on reviewing these same slides again, some years later, it was discovered that hundreds of them had, in fact, abnormal or suspicious cells in them and should not have been reported as “Normal”.
These women, with normal results that later, under review, showed to be abnormal, should have been informed of this immediately. This would have allowed them to go for further in-depth cancer screening that could have saved their lives. But they were never told and only found out when it was too late, when they developed full-blown cervical cancer.
This failure to advise these women in a timely and honest fashion about the real situation with their Pap Smear results was not an unfortunate or tragic mistake or administrative oversight. No, it was a deliberate decision to withhold the information so as not to cause undue alarm among those women affected. This was reckless and negligent. And Dr Tony Holohan, as chief medical officer to the HSE, oversaw this and did nothing about it.
Then, in May 2021, in an open letter to the press, Dr Holohan had this to say about an untested vaccine:
“The COVID-19 Vaccination Programme offers great hope. Vaccination has enabled those most at risk to regain many freedoms that were taken from you by this virus. As more people are vaccinated, we are in a position to recommend some increases in lower risk social opportunities including family visits, personal services, non-essential retail and a return to religious services, in a safe and controlled manner”.
At the time of making this grandiose statement, Holohan knew that the vaccine was untested and presumed safe and effective. We now know that it was neither, and many people have died as a result of this kind of misguided advice.
